Dow in Belgium: technological innovation in the heart of Europe

Dow has been in Belgium since 1970. The plant in Seneffe had been jointly owned by Dow and the American technology company Corning until 2016, when it was taken over completely by Dow. Today, Dow is present across five locations in Belgium, with the main plant in Seneffe combining production, commercial functions, research & development and application engineering, also in fields like healthcare and electronics, all in one place.

Dow’s operations cover a broad range of science-based products and solutions, from packaging and infrastructure to consumer care. In Belgium, they have a plant in Seneffe, further manufacturing facilities in Tertre and in Zwijndrecht, and offices in Antwerp and Brussels. For the Seneffe plant, Wallonia’s geographic location – with Belgium being at the center of Europe – has allowed Dow to attract a diversified, skilled and multilingual workforce, as well as easy access for many of the company’s key customers in Europe.

Wallonia and Belgium are ideally located to help Dow pursue its activities in Europe. Europe has set the trend to enable energy innovation, and our technology and expertise address the specialized needs of our customers in these large and sustainable growth markets.

Frank van der Meer, Seneffe Site Leader

The Dow plant in Seneffe employs approximately 450 people and produces different silicones for three major market segments: home and personal care, including additives for detergents and dishwasher tabs, adhesive and pressure sensitive applications, like bar code labels, luggage badges or baking paper, and high-performance building applications. The plant continuously invests to maintain high productivity and competitiveness and has a strong commitment to sustainability.

With its silicone production, Dow Silicones Belgium is contributing to achieve the overall Dow ambition of becoming the most innovative, customer-centric, inclusive, and sustainable materials science company in the world.

Dow also recently invested in a new inspirationstudio on the Seneffe campus, to develop a new customer-centric co-creation possibility. The new space showcases Dow’s innovation capabilities and enables the company to innovate with customers to create new solutions together that bring value to both Dow and its customers.
